Global Apparel Battle Intensifies as Bangladesh and Vietnam Climb, India Faces Value Challenge

The global apparel export arena is undergoing a major shift as emerging players rise swiftly through value-driven strategies. According to Balkrishan Sharma, Chief Operating Officer of Sintex Industries and Member of Reliance Group, Bangladesh has made a powerful leap forward in the first quarter of FY25 (Jan–Mar), achieving an impressive 26.64 percent growth in apparel exports to the United States, reaching a value of USD 2.22 billion. More notably, it saw a 25.24 percent rise in export volume, showcasing both demand and scale.

India, while performing well in terms of volume with a leading 27.17 percent increase and a respectable 24.04 percent growth in value, faces an urgent concern. A -2.46 percent drop in unit prices poses a red flag. In a margin-sensitive industry like apparel exports, such a decline may indicate underutilisation of design, branding, or innovation that typically command higher premiums. Expanding quantity without value-add can create a treadmill effect growth without gain.

In contrast, Vietnam is demonstrating a textbook move up the value chain. It not only registered 13.96 percent growth in export value and 9.14 percent in volume but also managed to hike its unit prices by 4.42 percent. This signals a well-crafted strategy that favours premiumisation and higher margins, a path India must aim to follow more consistently.

Meanwhile, China, once the unchallenged leader, shows signs of a gradual slowdown. With a modest 4.18 percent growth in value and 2.30 percent in volume, and only a 1.83 percent rise in prices, its dominance appears to be fading under global shifts in sourcing preferences.

As the global apparel supply chain reshapes, value creation, brand strength, and strategic innovation emerge as the new markers of leadership in the textile world.
